Nitrides are a large class of compounds with a wide range of properties and applications. Like carbides, nitrides can be used as refractory materials, cutting materials and hard coatings. Due to their large band gaps, thermal shock resistance and stability at high temperatures, nitrides can be used as insulators and employed for automotive engines and parts for gas turbines, respectively.
